.cursorrules to .mdc migration

How do I migrate .cursorrules to the current Cursor rules format?

Paste the old file below. The converter wraps it as .cursor/rules/project.mdc with description and alwaysApply: true, which is what current Cursor loads. Keep .cursorrules only if an older build still lists it. If you keep both, regenerate them together or they will drift.

Convert .cursorrules

Paste the legacy file. Save the result as .cursor/rules/project.mdc.

.cursor/rules/project.mdc
---description: "Migrated from .cursorrules"alwaysApply: true--- # Project rules - Read the files you will change before editing them.- Match the patterns already in the repo.- Do not add dependencies the task did not ask for.

Questions

Does .cursorrules still work?

Older Cursor builds still read a root .cursorrules file. Current project rules are .mdc files in .cursor/rules. A new project should use the .mdc file.

Where do I save the converted file?

Create .cursor/rules/ if it is missing and save the download as .cursor/rules/project.mdc. Commit it and start a new chat.
